How it goes and what to expect
How it works
The specialist treats the skin with short, controlled flashes of light. The light responds to what makes the tone uneven: darkened areas, freckles, redness and fine vessels. After that the skin does the work itself — the spots first darken, then exfoliate and fade, and the tone becomes more even and fresher.
How it feels
The sensation is usually described as short, warm flashes — something like light snaps against the skin. It’s more unusual than painful. Your eyes are protected with special goggles during the procedure; if an area turns out to be more sensitive, the specialist will adjust the settings.
Recovery
No special recovery is required. In the first 24–48 hours slight redness or a little swelling is possible. In the first days pigment spots may become more noticeable and darker, then exfoliate — this is intended. Make-up can usually be applied the next day. The main rule before and after is a daily sunscreen.
When results show
The first changes are usually visible after just 1–3 procedures: spots lighten after exfoliating, redness becomes less noticeable and the tone more even. With daily sun protection the result lasts for many months.
Number of sessions
Most often 1–3 procedures are enough — traditional IPL devices usually require 4–6 sessions. The specialist will build the exact plan at the consultation; to maintain the result, repeat sessions are carried out from time to time.

Limitations and contraindications
- Requires an assessment of the phototype, the nature of the pigmentation and tan before the procedure
- Pregnancy and the breastfeeding period
- A fresh tan or self-tan (for two weeks before the procedure — no sun, sunbed or self-tanner)
- Taking medicines that increase the skin’s sensitivity to light
- A dark skin phototype — suitability is assessed individually
- Active inflammation, herpes or skin damage in the procedure area
- Oncological conditions
- Epilepsy with a reaction to flashes of light
- A recent course of isotretinoin (timing is discussed with the specialist)

The spots got darker after the procedure — is that normal?
Yes, that’s how it should be: in the first days pigment spots often darken and then exfoliate — and the pigmentation itself goes with them. This is a normal stage of the process, not a side effect.
Can the procedure be done in summer or with a tan?
Not with a fresh tan: for two weeks before the procedure — no sun, sunbed or self-tanner. In summer the procedure is possible with a daily sunscreen; if that’s inconvenient, it’s better to move the course to a less sunny season.
